Operator basics

Clipboard & Firing Card

The clipboard is the operator's defense against memory errors. A useful firing card records the entire solution, identifies its source, and becomes invalid the moment the NEST moves or one of its paired ballistic values changes.

The minimum firing-card fields

A solution is not complete unless it identifies the target and origin as well as the gun settings. Record target name, current NEST coordinate, bearing, range, ammunition, powder charges, elevation, assigned barrel, and whether the values have been read back.

Keep paired values together

Range, charges, and elevation describe one trajectory. Bearing belongs to the same target and origin. Copy them as a block and never carry a remembered elevation into a new range or charge selection.

Use one card per target

When both barrels are prepared for different objectives, separate the cards physically or label them LEFT and RIGHT. This prevents the shell for one target being combined with the elevation for another.

  1. Name the target before writing numbers.
  2. Record the current NEST position.
  3. Copy bearing and range from the final NEST-to-target line.
  4. Write shell, charges, and elevation together.
  5. Add a check mark only after loading and gun settings match.

Invalidate stale cards visibly

Relocation makes every bearing and range from the previous position stale. A changed charge count also invalidates elevation. Cross out the old block, preserve it for diagnosis, and create a fresh solution rather than overwriting one field.

Read back before firing

Speak or mentally read the card in the same order every time: target, origin, bearing, range, shell, charges, elevation, barrel. A consistent sequence makes an omitted or mismatched value easier to notice.
